Notes

Daydream is intermediate-level music for piano. It is a hypnotic, introspective piece written over a left-hand ostinato, mostly in a minor. The music has a peaceful, dreamlike quality. Quiet melodic fragments build, become more insistent, then fade away.

The notes are not technically hard, but the expressive nuances and ritards make it a different kind of challenge for the young pianist. The meter is mostly 6/8. Occasional shortened measures let the music surge forward. The performer must count carefully.

Daydream was selected as a contest requirement for the Renee Fisher Foundation piano competition in Connecticut. A student in the Junior Division performed it at their winner’s concert in May 2002.
