Notes

Contemporary chamber music for flute and harp, Zoa evokes a primordial landscape.

The music is in one movement, with sections marked by changes from alto flute to flute to piccolo. Both performers use extended techniques.

Zoa’s music sets an exotic mood. The sounds in Zoa are an imagined music of elemental creatures. The composer imagined “protozoa”, as well as William Blake’s monumentally mystic poem “The Four Zoas” where each Zoa is both a force of nature and an aspect of our personas. The harp scrapes and brushes strings on its way to both wild and gentle glissandi and angular rhythms; the various flutes (alto, C, and piccolo) thump and click, break into wildly leaping song, and exchange tremolos with the harp.

Dedication

Zoa for flutes and harp is dedicated to “2”, the duo of Peter Bloom, flutes, and Mary Jane Rupert, harp.
