Concert of Poetry-Inspired Music by Pamela Marshall at Depot Square Gallery

In association with the exhibition "Improvisations in 2D and 3D" at the Depot Square Gallery, composer Pamela J. Marshall invites music lovers to a recital of new solo pieces for woodwinds on January 11, 2008 at the Gallery, 1837 Massachusetts Ave., Lexington. The program "Poetry-Inspired Music" presents Marshall's musical interpretations of poetic moments, sometimes whole poems, sometimes single lines.

Performers and music

Veronica Kenney, who premiered Marshall's Enchanted in 2006, will play Beyond the Storm for oboe. The music depicts the poem "La Mer" by Oscar Wilde. Jessi Rosinski, member of the Callithumpian Consort at New England Conservatory, will play High Flight for flute. This music conveys the soaring ideas of the same-named poem by John Gillespie Magee. This poem, well known to aviators, describes the transcendent experience of flying high above the clouds. Percussionist Jeff Means will join Ms. Rosinski in two pieces, "float into the quiet skies" and "melt into the flux", both inspired by lines from the poem "The Mirror of Diana" by Mathilde Blind.

Clarinetist Monica Fay Duncan will play Summer Into Winter, inspired by the seasonal images of Shakespeare's Sonnet #5. Pamela Marshall will play a horn solo, Sunrise on the Hills, inspired by images in the Longfellow poem of the same name.

The group of musicians will also accompany a reading from the Art-Poem-Music project of poems by Elizabeth Kirschner, set and read by Marshall. These poems, inspired by the art of Sirarpi Heghinian Walzer, are part of an ongoing collaboration between these three artists. Marshall has long been inspired by the nature poetry of May Swenson, so the finale of the concert will be a musical responsive reading, with the audience, of the Swenson poem Summer's Bounty.
